Hivemind Capital Hires Investment Banking Vet as It Expands to Hong Kong

Quick take:

  • Hivemind is expanding its territory to Hong Kong.
  • The Web3 investment company has hired investment banking veteran Stanley Huo to spearhead its business in Asia.
  • Huo’s 15 years of investment banking experience includes roles at China Renaissance, UBS, Citi and BAML.

Hivemind Capital has hired Stanley Huo as head of its Asia business. The Web3 investment company is expanding to Hong Kong to take advantage of the more defined crypto regulations.

Huo is an investment banking veteran boasting 15 years of experience. He was the managing director of China Rennaisance between October 2021 and September 2022.

Before that, he served as an investment director at UBS’  investment banking division and was also the vice president of investment banking at Citi. He also had a stint at Bank of America Merril Lynch (BAML), Kinetic and Oriente.

Commenting on his appointment in a conversation with The Block, Huo commended the Hong Kong government for creating a conducive environment for Web3 companies to operate in.

“It was very interesting to see that the Hong Kong government welcomes all the Web3 capital and talents… They want to build up a Web3 centre,” said Huo.

This announcement comes following Hivemind’s launch of a $300 million crypto fund in June 2023. At the time, the company had already secured $60 million for the Liquid Opportunity Fund, according to Hivemind founder Matt Zhang.

Hivemind is following a list of Web3-focused companies that are expanding their operations to Hong Kong. This follows the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission’s introduction of virtual asset trading regulations, which allows crypto exchanges and other custodial services providers to operate in the country under the new regulations.

Binance, Hi, and Standard Chartered-backed digital asset custody solutions provider Zodia Custody are among those looking to take advantage of the clear regulatory framework in Hong Kong.

The country has also launched various mechanisms for supporting Web3 builders and talent. In July 2023, the government launched a task force to provide recommendations on the sustainable and responsible development of Web3.
